Titles open doors. Shipping under real constraints is what keeps them open. A note on growth, optics, and what ‘senior’ ought to mean in Mzansi tech.

LinkedIn will happily print Senior next to your name the moment a recruiter needs a keyword. Your family might clap when you get the certificate. The group chat might even send the GIF with the little crown.

None of that tells us whether you can hold production when the stand-up was vague, the spec was a voice note, and the only “staging environment” is courage.

What the title sometimes hides

In bigger ecosystems, “senior” can mean years in the same stack, a certain salary band, or that you stopped asking permission before refactoring. In smaller SA teams (agencies, startups, civic projects) it often means you are the one who gets the 9 p.m. message when something breaks.

That is not glamour. It is responsibility.

The township Wi‑Fi test (metaphorical but real)

I do not mean a literal speed test , though if you have never shipped a feature while tethering from a phone with 20% battery, you are missing a useful education.

I mean: can you still think clearly when the conditions are not Silicon Valley?

  • When the client pays late but the deadline did not move
  • When “documentation” is a PDF from 2019 and a kind smile
  • When your junior is brilliant but exhausted, and someone has to model patience

Senior is not only the code you write. It is the temperature you set in the room, even when the room is a Zoom and the load shedding app just turned red.

What I try to practice

  • Explain the why, not only the what, so the next person does not inherit a black box
  • Leave breadcrumbs (ADRs, READMEs, a decent handover) because memory is not a strategy
  • Protect scope without being cruel; push back with data, not ego
  • Remember that someone’s first “real” job might be on your team; your tone becomes their inner voice for years

The uncomfortable bit

You can be “senior” on paper and still learning. You can be mid-level and already carrying people well. Titles are compression algorithms that lose nuance.

So take the promotion if it comes. Enjoy the raise. Then ask the harder question: who is safer because you are in the building or on the repo, today?

That answer matters more than the label.
