What is Linux?

Linux runs the internet, your phone, and most servers you've ever used. Here's what it actually is and why it matters.

You have probably typed a URL into a browser a thousand times without thinking about what's on the other side. Chances are, whatever server received that request was running Linux.

Not Windows. Not macOS. Linux.

It runs Google, Facebook, Amazon, every major cloud provider, the International Space Station, and the Android phone in your pocket. Understanding what it is will make you a better developer, a sharper infrastructure thinker, and honestly just a more informed person who works with software.

Where it came from

In 1991, a 21-year-old Finnish computer science student named Linus Torvalds started writing a new operating system kernel as a personal project. He posted about it on a Usenet newsgroup with famously understated language, describing it as "just a hobby, won't be big and professional."

He was wrong about that.

Before Linux, there was Unix, an operating system developed at Bell Labs in 1969. Unix was powerful but expensive and closed-source. It ran on mainframes and servers but wasn't accessible to most people. When Torvalds built the Linux kernel, he combined it with GNU, a collection of free software tools that Richard Stallman had been assembling since 1983. The result was a complete, free, open-source operating system anyone could download, run, and modify.

That combination changed everything.

What an operating system actually is

Before we go further, let's be clear about what an OS does.

An operating system is the software layer between your hardware (CPU, RAM, storage, network card) and your applications. When you open a browser, it's the OS that tells the CPU to allocate memory, reads files from disk, manages the network connection, and keeps everything running without stepping on itself.

The kernel is the core of the OS. It talks directly to the hardware. Everything else (file managers, browsers, terminals, GUIs) runs on top of it.

Linux is technically just the kernel. When people say "Linux," they usually mean a full Linux distribution like Ubuntu, Debian, or Fedora, which bundles the kernel with everything else you need to actually use a system.

Why open source matters here

Linux is open source, meaning anyone can read the source code, modify it, and distribute their own version. The Linux kernel has over 25,000 active contributors from companies like Google, Meta, Intel, Red Hat, and individual developers everywhere.

This isn't just an ideological thing. The practical result is that Linux gets security patches faster, runs on more hardware types than any other OS, and has been hardened over three decades by some of the best engineers in the world.

What Linux actually looks like

Most people picture a black terminal screen when they think of Linux. That's one way to use it.

But Linux also has desktop environments. Ubuntu ships with GNOME. Linux Mint looks very close to Windows. Fedora is what Red Hat engineers run as their daily driver. If you have never used Linux as a desktop, download Ubuntu and run it in a virtual machine. It's more familiar than you'd expect.

On servers, you almost always interact via the command line. SSH into a VPS or cloud instance and you get a terminal. That's it. No GUI. No mouse. Just a shell, usually Bash or Zsh.

The distributions

A Linux distro is a packaged version of Linux with specific tools, package managers, and defaults. There are hundreds. The most relevant ones for developers:

Ubuntu is the most popular distro for servers and desktops. Maintained by Canonical. Great documentation, massive community, and most hosting providers default to it.

Debian is what Ubuntu is based on. More conservative release cycle. Very stable. Popular for production servers where you don't want surprises.

CentOS / Rocky Linux / AlmaLinux are in the Red Hat family. Common in enterprise environments.

Alpine Linux is tiny, under 5MB. Almost every Docker base image uses it because of the size.

Arch Linux is for people who want to build their system from scratch and understand every component. There's a reason people who use Arch mention it constantly.

The numbers

These aren't soft claims.

Linux powers 96.3% of the top one million web servers worldwide. Every single one of the TOP500 supercomputers on earth runs Linux, a position it has held since November 2017. Linux commands 90% of public cloud infrastructure. The Android operating system, which runs on roughly two thirds of smartphones globally, is built on the Linux kernel.

When you deploy to AWS, Google Cloud, Azure, Hetzner, DigitalOcean, or any South African VPS provider, you are almost certainly running Linux.

Why developers should care

If you work in software, you will touch Linux regularly whether you intend to or not. Every container you build with Docker runs on Linux. Every Kubernetes cluster runs on Linux. Every CI/CD pipeline runs on Linux. When your app is live and something breaks at 2am, you are SSHing into a Linux server.

Learning basic Linux command-line skills pays back every single time. Navigating directories, reading logs, editing config files, setting file permissions, managing processes. These are not advanced skills. They are baseline.

Start here:

  • ls, cd, pwd, cp, mv, rm for file navigation
  • cat, less, grep for reading and searching files
  • top or htop for watching processes
  • sudo, chmod, chown for permissions
  • ssh for connecting to remote servers
  • nano or vim for editing files in the terminal

The South African angle

In South Africa, almost every VPS you rent, every server your app runs on, every data centre at Teraco in Johannesburg, runs Linux. Providers like Xneelo, HostAfrica, Axxess, and EliteHost all default to Linux for their server infrastructure. Understanding the OS your code actually lives on is basic professional hygiene.

Linux is not a niche thing for sysadmins. It is the operating system of the internet.
